Connecting to BitlBee

Connecting to BitlBee

IRC Client

To connect to bitlbee you will need any IRC client. In this section I will use RevolutionIRC.

IRC Client Considerations

Please take your time and do your research for other IRC clients, as they come in many variations. RevolutionIRC is one I would consider more full-featured. If it’s something you also utilize, use it. But maybe you want a much more minimal and suckless client. Or you live inside your terminal? It’s also exciting to take a deep dive into the old net, learn, and even use the same tools they used!

RevolutionIRC Configuration

The following configuration shows how to connect RevolutionIRC to your workstation:

Server Settings

  • Server address: Your workstation’s IP or localhost
  • Port: 6667 (default IRC port)
  • SSL/TLS: Optional (recommended for remote connections)

Connection Details

  • Configure your server address to point to where BitlBee is running
  • For localhost testing, use 127.0.0.1 or localhost
  • For VPS deployment, use your server’s IP address

Once configured, connect to the BitlBee network and you’re ready for the first-time setup.
